The dark-brown stoneware tankard with pewter mounts is painted with the figures of the apostles, bands of flowers, and the inscription: “TRINK UND IS GOTT NICHT VERGIS 1675”. Since the early seventeenth century, the town of Creußen near Bayreuth has produced a special type of modelled, painted tankard. Unlike grey or blue-grey German stoneware, the objects are remarkable for their brightly coloured motifs, such as this “Apostelkrug” featuring the twelve apostles or vessels adorned with the gods of antiquity.
